An elderly man named Mokbul Hossain, 85, has drowned in a pond while gathering mangoes in Dupchanchia, Bogura.

The accident happened at some time during the night of Wednesday (3 June) in the Altafnagar Bazar area of Gobindapur union in the upazila.

Mokbul Hossain was the son of the late Alim Uddin Pramanik of the Altafnagar Bazar area. For 15-16 years he had lived with his wife in the tin-shed house of Shafiqul Islam, an expatriate from the area.

Locals said that in the morning his grandson Selim, 21, got up and went to the pond bank, where he saw his grandfather floating in the water. He cried out at once, and family members and local people recovered the body and took it home.

It is thought that Mokbul Hossain slipped and fell into the water while gathering mangoes on the pond bank at some time between 2am and 6.30am.

Tazmilur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dupchanchia police station, confirmed the recovery of the body.
