Members of the environmental organisation Team for Energy and Environmental Research (Tir) have rescued a black kite (bhubon chil), an endangered species, in Bogura.

The kite was rescued in a sick condition from the Colony area of the town on Tuesday (24 January) night and is now being treated.

Tir president Rifat Hasan said a student named Taniha Tanim Tuba had posted about rescuing a black kite in a group on Facebook. When the post came to their attention, they immediately rescued the bird from the Colony area of Bogura town.

Taniha Tanim Tuba said: "I saw the bird lying injured on fallow land in Bohail village in Bogura's Shajahanpur upazila. I brought it home and looked after it. Then, thinking of its care and proper treatment, I posted on Facebook wanting to hand it over to the forest department or someone who works with such birds."

Arifur Rahman, a lecturer in the zoology department of Government Azizul Haque College and a bird photographer, said the black kite is an endangered native bird of Bangladesh. Male and female black kites look alike, but the female is slightly larger.

Jahangir Kabir, wildlife officer of the forest department's Wildlife and Nature Conservation Division in Rajshahi, said the forest department is responsible for conserving the black kite as it is a native bird.

Tir president Rifat Hasan said that after first aid and monitoring of its physical condition, steps will be taken quickly to release the bird as advised by the forest department.
