The BNP has held a tree-planting programme to make up for trees broken around the reception site arranged for the homecoming of its acting chairman, Tarique Rahman.

On the morning of Saturday 27 December, the programme was inaugurated on the 36 July Expressway of the capital's 300 Feet highway by Aminul Haque, the BNP's central sports affairs secretary and convener of the Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP. He planted several saplings himself.

Aminul Haque said some trees and plants were damaged by the crowds that gathered for the reception, and that various kinds of trees were being planted under a party decision to make up for the loss.

He said about 300 saplings had been collected from nurseries, and more trees would be planted if needed. The programme would run all day, he said.

He added that protecting the environment and preserving the country's beauty are part of social responsibility. The BNP has carried out such social activities in the past and will continue to do so in future, he said.

Speaking about the upcoming 13th national election, Aminul Haque said Bangladesh belongs to everyone, and the BNP will work united to establish a people's government through a free, fair and neutral election. He said the party is committed to doing politics for ordinary people by implementing the plan of action announced by Tarique Rahman.

He also said an initiative had been taken to keep the area clean by gradually removing the banners and festoons put up at various places in Dhaka North for Tarique Rahman's arrival.

Earlier, on Friday morning, the Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP, led by Aminul Haque, began cleaning and removing waste around the reception site.
