Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr F M Siddiqui has pledged to raise Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) to international standard. He made the pledge on 30 April at a rally and tree-planting programme held to mark BMU's 29th University Day.
He opened the colourful rally in front of the university's B Block. The rally went round the campus and ended at the BMU Super Specialised Hospital, where the vice-chancellor and others then took part in the tree-planting programme.
Treatment at home, not abroad
Speaking at a gathering before the rally, the vice-chancellor said: "We are committed to raising Bangladesh Medical University to international standard in higher medical education, research and medical care. Alongside improving excellence, we are also working to add a new dimension to innovation."
He added: "We are working so that the people of the country get all kinds of treatment, including for complex diseases, at home, and do not have to go abroad for treatment."
Referring to the global context and the overall situation in the country, the vice-chancellor said University Day had been celebrated on a smaller scale this year with savings in mind. As part of the programme, however, better-quality meals were arranged for patients.
Fruit trees planted
The pro-vice-chancellors, treasurer, registrar, faculty deans, departmental chairmen, directors, teachers, doctors, officers and staff took part in the tree planting. Various fruit trees were planted, including Amrapali mango, olive, BARI mango, amra (hog plum), coconut, lychee, black plum (kalojam), amla, pomegranate and mini jamrul.
BMU was founded on 30 April 1998 and is now one of the country's leading institutions for medical education and research. It has 8 faculties, 59 academic departments and 55 affiliated institutions, with 5,161 students and a workforce of more than 4,500. The hospital has 1,792 beds in all, 878 of which provide free care.
The day's programme ended with the raising of the national flag and the university flag and the release of balloons.
