The Vast Potential of the Blue Economy

The ocean economy is worth trillions worldwide, but in Bangladesh marine fish species are declining, Shykh Seraj reports after visiting Cox's Bazar fish markets.

The ocean economy is already having a huge impact on the world economy, with activity worth 3 to 5 trillion US dollars a year centred on the sea. Marine fish, plants and animals supply protein to 15 per cent of the world's population. Even more remarkably, 30 per cent of the world's gas and fuel oil comes from undersea fields, and sea-based pharmaceutical industries are growing in many countries.

Marine fish at risk

Marine fish are another big chapter of the blue economy. On paper, Bangladesh has 475 marine fish species, but reality is different: the Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation and the marine fisheries and technology centre say 250 to 300 species exist.

Marine fish varieties are declining day by day. In March, Shykh Seraj visited several marine fish markets in Cox's Bazar to find out why and saw alarming things, shown in detail in the video.
