Members of the Ghasuria camp of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have recovered snake venom worth nearly Tk 1 crore as it was being smuggled to India under cover of darkness through the Birampur border in Dinajpur. No one could be arrested.

The venom was found abandoned at around 3:30am on 9 April in the Eidgah field area next to main pillar 289/1S on the upazila's Ghasuria border.

Naib Subedar Shahjahan Sarkar, commander of the local Ghasuria BGB camp, claimed the recovered venom was worth nearly Tk 1 crore.

The BGB said that, acting on a tip-off that snake venom was being smuggled to India through the border area at night, members of the Ghasuria camp took up a watchful position in the Ghasuria Eidgah field area. When a man passed through the area, the BGB members chased him. The venom, kept in glass bottles, was then recovered abandoned. No one could be arrested.

Asked about it, Ghasuria BGB camp commander Shahjahan Sarkar said a good quantity of snake venom had been recovered abandoned as it was being smuggled to India through the border area late at night, with an estimated value of nearly Tk 1 crore. It was sent to the Joypurhat 20 Battalion that same night for testing.

Lt Col Tanjilur Rahman Bhuiyan, commander of Joypurhat 20 Battalion, said BGB members of the Ghasuria camp recovered a quantity of snake venom in an overnight operation. Whether the venom is real or fake will be known after further tests, and the necessary legal action will then be taken.
