A biodiversity conservation centre has been inaugurated at the Mahera Police Training Centre in Mirzapur, Tangail, to mark World Biodiversity Day. The centre, set up by the Bonayan project, was opened recently along with a safe drinking water plant from Probaho.

The biodiversity centre was set up by Bonayan under the supervision of the police training centre, and the drinking water plant with help from the Probaho project. Trainees and visitors to the centre will now be able to learn about the benefits of different tree species in keeping the environment in balance.

The chief guest was Md Moynul Islam NDC, commandant (DIG) of the Police Training Centre in Tangail. Sheikh Shabab Ahmed, representative of the Bonayan and Probaho projects, was special guest.

Also present were Additional DIG Md Mahbubur Rahman, Superintendent of Police (Training) Abdur Rahim Shah Chowdhury, Additional Superintendent of Police (Finance and Administration) Sheikh Rajibul Hasan, and Bonayan and Probaho representatives Ahmed Raihan Ahsanullah, Mizanur Kabir, Moslema Akter Maya and Akhtar Anwar Khan, along with senior officials of the training centre.

The Bonayan project began in 1980 to protect the balance of the environment and conserve biodiversity. It has so far distributed and planted 11.5 crore saplings in 18 districts. Probaho, since starting in 2009, has set up 112 water purification plants, ensuring a daily water supply for more than 2 lakh 75 thousand people.
