What to Grow in the Month of Bhadra

The Bengali month of Bhadra, from mid-August to mid-September, is the time to sow early rabi vegetables and plant fruit trees.

Crops

The month of Bhadra has begun, and with it sharat, or autumn, in the cycle of seasons. In this period (mid-August to mid-September) early rabi vegetables can be grown, and fruit trees can be planted too. Here are the tasks for Bhadra.

  • Sow bottle gourd and bean seeds.
  • Sow cauliflower, cabbage, aubergine and tomato seeds.
  • Prepare land for kohlrabi and sweet pumpkin, transplant the seedlings and apply fertiliser.
  • Prepare seedbeds for mid-season and late rabi vegetables and sow the seeds.
  • Harvest late kharif-2 vegetables and save their seed.
  • Look after fruit seedlings planted earlier.
  • Plant improved fruit seedlings or grafts.
  • Stake plants and protect seedlings with fencing.
  • Prune trees after the fruit has been picked.
