Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui has inaugurated the Tree Plantation Drive 2024.

He opened BGB's week-long plantation drive on Tuesday (2 July) by planting an amloki (Indian gooseberry) sapling at Bakultala ground at BGB headquarters in Pilkhana.

He said everyone serving at BGB headquarters and at all BGB regions, institutions, sectors, battalions and BOPs across the country would make the programme a success by planting saplings of fruit, timber, medicinal and other trees on vacant land at their establishments.

Highlighting the theme "Let us decorate the country with trees, let us enrich Bangladesh", the BGB chief advised planting trees in the right places according to a plan rather than planting unnecessary ones, and stressed proper care of them. He urged all BGB members to plant vegetables, fruit and medicinal plants not only at their workplaces but also on fallow and vacant land in their home yards.

The BGB director general said trees release oxygen into the atmosphere, absorb carbon dioxide from the air, prevent air pollution and maintain the balance of the natural environment. So, besides ensuring healthy lives and a sound working environment, more trees need to be planted to improve people's living standards.

He added that BGB has always played a leading role for the greater good of the country and its people, and pledged that all BGB members would contribute strongly to building an evergreen Golden Bengal by making the plantation programme a success.

Under this year's drive, a total of 73,515 trees are planned to be planted at BGB headquarters and at all regions, institutions, sectors, battalions and BOPs.
