Two fishing cats have been rescued from Tamai Fakir Para village in Belkuchi upazila of Sirajganj. The animals were pulled out of a deep abandoned septic tank in the village around noon on 15 January.

Mamun Biswas, a social worker and chairman of the local environmental organisation The Bird Safety House, rescued the two animals alive with help from forest department staff.

Confirming the rescue to Jagonews on the morning of 16 January, Mamun Biswas said the animals are properly called "mecho biral" (fishing cat), though they are commonly known as "mecho bagh". After the rescue they were released through the forest department at the Bangabandhu Setu West Sirajganj Eco Park.

Belkuchi upazila forester Rafiqul Islam told Jagonews that local people had reported the fishing cats to the 999 emergency number. "We then told Mamun Biswas, and he rescued the two animals with his people. After they were handed over to us, they were released at the eco park."
