Beef has gone up again in Dhaka to Tk 850 a kilo, and chicken and eggs remain expensive, but the arrival of winter vegetables has eased several vegetable prices, Banglanews24 found in the markets of Mirpur 2, 10 and 11, Agargaon, Mohammadpur, Kalyanpur and Farmgate on Wednesday, 28 October.

Mutton sells for Tk 1,200 to 1,250 a kilo and she-goat meat for Tk 1,100 to 1,150. Sonali chicken is Tk 320 a kilo, broiler Tk 180 to 185 and layer Tk 350. Eggs cost Tk 50 a hali (four).

Butcher Md. Ilias of Sonar Bangla Market in Rupnagar said higher cattle prices forced him to raise the price, and beef cannot be sold below Tk 850 without water being pumped into it by machine. Al Amin, at the next stall, said he would let his last two kilos go for Tk 800 in the afternoon.

Vegetables are a little cheaper: large aubergine Tk 110 a kilo, medium Tk 80 to 100, yardlong beans Tk 80, pointed gourd Tk 60, bitter gourd Tk 70 to 80, green papaya Tk 25 to 30 and bottle gourd Tk 50 to 60. A 400-500 g cauliflower costs Tk 40, flat beans Tk 120 a kilo and pumpkin Tk 50. Green chillies are Tk 120 to 160, local half-ripe tomatoes Tk 140 and imported red tomatoes Tk 100.

Leafy greens: red amaranth Tk 15 to 20 a bunch, bottle gourd leaves Tk 40, water spinach and radish leaves Tk 10 to 15. Onions cost Tk 45 to 55 depending on type, Diamond potatoes Tk 25 to 30, local ginger Tk 140 to 180 and imported garlic Tk 180 to 200.

Rice is unchanged: coarse Swarna and IRRI Tk 50 to 58, Paijam and BRRI-28 and BRRI-29 Tk 58 to 65, Nazirshail and miniket Tk 70 to 85. Most shops are short of edible oil, which sells at Tk 205 a litre; retailers say wholesalers are holding back after company representatives hinted at a price rise.
