Members of Animal Lovers of Patuakhali have rescued another pair of kalnagini snakes from the office of the Barishal Range Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG). That makes two pairs of kalnagini found at the office in the past two days.

Police personnel working at the DIG's office spotted the snakes on the afternoon of Monday 8 June and informed Animal Lovers of Patuakhali. The two snakes were rescued after five hours of continuous effort.

Asadullah Hasan Musa, director of Animal Lovers of Patuakhali, who rescued the snakes, said: "Police working at the DIG's office again saw snakes at the same spot. We ran another rescue operation from the afternoon, and at that time another pair of kalnagini snakes was found."

Earlier, on the afternoon of Sunday 7 June, three snakes were seen at the DIG's office. To rescue them, decoration on one side of the office first had to be broken; when no snake was found there, a wall was broken. A pair of mildly venomous kalnagini snakes was then found in a gap in the wall and handed over to the Forest Department.

Musa added: "It does not seem that the DIG's office is completely free of snakes. Many people working there say they have still seen snakes here and there. Our work to rescue them is continuing."

Arif Rahman, Barishal Sadar range officer of the Social Forestry Department, said: "Members of Animal Lovers of Patuakhali rescued four kalnagini snakes in two days. The two snakes rescued on the first day have been released into the forest. The two rescued on the second day are in the Forest Department's custody."

Barishal Range DIG Md Mostafizur Rahman said: "The area around the office is full of bushes. The snakes may have entered the office from there. A search is being made to see whether there are more snakes."
