A week-long tree fair has been organised in Barguna under the theme "Plant trees and care for them, build a country of a healthy generation". At the fair, one mango tree is being offered for Tk 30,000.
Barguna-1 MP Advocate Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu opened the Tree Plantation Drive and Tree Fair 2023 at the Barguna Central Shaheed Minar premises on the morning of Wednesday, 16 August. The fair is organised by the district administration and the Forest Department.
A stall apart
More than 10 stalls are taking part in the fair. Every stall sells a range of trees at a range of prices, but one stands out: Abu Sufian Nursery of Nesarabad, Pirojpur, owned by Soleman.
This stall is asking Tk 30,000 for a single mango tree. The tree is 7 feet tall and three years old, and currently carries 14 green mangoes. According to the seller, it is a BARI Aam-11 year-round (baromashi) variety that bears fruit all through the year, fruiting three times a year.
Few sales, high prices
A visit to the fair at noon found rows of native and foreign forest, fruit, vegetable and medicinal plants on display at the stalls, along with various flower and fruit trees. Several stalls had not sold a single plant between morning and noon. Many visitors asked the price and left.
Buyers say trees at the fair cost more than elsewhere. Sellers say high transport costs have forced them to charge somewhat more than usual. Patuakhali deputy conservator of forests Md Shafikul Islam assured that prices would come down somewhat once supplies increase in two days.
Barguna deputy commissioner Md Rafiqul Islam presided over the Tree Plantation Drive and Tree Fair 2023 event. Special guests included Md Jahangir Kabir, Md Monirul Islam, Md Motalen Mridha, Advocate Sanjib Das and Hasanur Rahman Jhantu.
