The loans of 1,434,482 farmers across Bangladesh who had borrowed up to Tk 10,000 have been waived together with the interest owed, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has told the Jatiya Sangsad. The figure covers the period from the present government taking office to July 2026.

The minister gave the information on 6 September in a written reply to Md Ruhul Amin, the opposition (Jamaat-e-Islami) member for Chuadanga-2. The government, he said, has paid the banks the Tk 1,352.74 crore they were owed on these loans, and farmers in every upazila have benefited from the waiver programme.

Loans of up to Tk 10,000 are the small advances typically taken by marginal and smallholder farmers. Clearing them with interest removes long-standing defaults from the banks' books for these borrowers, while the banks recover the balance from the treasury rather than from the farmer.

In the same sitting the minister answered a further question on taxpayers in Chuadanga district: 72,463 people there hold a TIN, of whom 21,567 filed returns for the 2025-26 tax year.
