Bangladesh had 17.9 per cent less rain than normal last September. Khulna division got more than normal and Barishal division normal rainfall, while every other division got less, Banglanews24 reported on Thursday from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department's monthly review.
According to the review, three lows formed over the Bay of Bengal in September and two became monsoon depressions. The second intensified into a deep depression on 23 September and crossed the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coast of India on 26 September; the third became a deep depression on 29 September, crossed the Myanmar coast and lay as a well-marked low over south-eastern Bangladesh and nearby areas on 30 September before weakening.
With an active monsoon and the lows and depressions, it rained in different parts of the country for most of the month, with heavy to very heavy rain in places and thundery gusts. The highest daily rainfall of the month, 142 mm, was recorded in Sylhet on 11 September.
Mild heatwaves swept parts of the country on 14-19, 21-22 and 28-29 September. The month's highest temperature, 37.6 degrees Celsius, was recorded in Sylhet on 28 September, and the lowest, 21.4 degrees, in Narayanganj on 20 September.
