The Bangladesh Navy's 22-day "Brood Hilsa Conservation Campaign 2026", which ran from 8 October to Thursday 29 October to protect spawning hilsa, has ended. It seized 8,421,670 metres of illegal net, another 166 nets of various kinds, four boats and 570 kg of brood hilsa. The base value of everything seized is Tk 61,18,03,890 (Tk 61.18 crore).
Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a press release on Friday that the navy ran 212 operations under "aid to civil power" and collected Tk 6,000 in fines.
Seven navy ships and several contingents patrolled nine districts. Ships and maritime patrol aircraft kept round-the-clock watch to stop local and foreign fishing vessels entering deep-sea waters and to prevent hilsa fishing during the ban.
Operations in the sea, coastal areas and inland rivers where hilsa spawn were coordinated with local administrations, the Coast Guard, river police and the Department of Fisheries. Seized nets were destroyed in front of local officials, recovered jatka (young hilsa) went to local orphanages, and offenders and their boats were handed to the administration for legal action.
ISPR said such campaigns play an important part in safe spawning and in raising the country's hilsa output. With the ban over, fishers are returning to the water.
