Bangladesh has exported 2,700 tonnes of mangoes so far this year, 1,000 tonnes more than last year. A total of 1,757 tonnes were exported last year.
Last year mangoes went to 28 countries; this year they have gone to 34. The largest share went to the United Kingdom, at 1,256 tonnes, followed by Italy with 296 tonnes, Saudi Arabia 260 tonnes, the United Arab Emirates 137 tonnes, Qatar 111 tonnes, Singapore 55 tonnes, Switzerland 14 tonnes, Germany 70 tonnes, France 85 tonnes, Sweden 65 tonnes, Kuwait 218 tonnes and Canada 40 tonnes.
Exports small against output
The country produces about 25 lakh tonnes of mangoes a year, but exports are very small compared with production. Only 232 tonnes were exported in 2017-18, 310 tonnes in 2018-19, 283 tonnes in 2019-20, 1,632 tonnes in 2020-21 and 1,757 tonnes in 2021-22.
Despite huge demand for the country's mangoes on the world market, exports are low because mangoes are not produced and packaged to international standards, including good agricultural practice. To raise exports, the agriculture ministry is implementing a project titled "Increasing the production of exportable mangoes".
Under this project farmers are given various support, including help to produce mangoes following good agricultural practice. As a result, in the project's very first year, 1,000 tonnes more mangoes were exported than last year.
Project director Md Arifur Rahman said mangoes will continue to be exported for another 15-20 days this year.
