A new foal has been born into the zebra family at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Sreepur, Gazipur. With the newcomer, the park now has 25 zebras.

The foal was born on Thursday (8 April), but the authorities announced it on Friday. The park's wildlife supervisor, Sarowar Hossain Khan, said both mother and foal are healthy, and the foal is roaming different parts of the enclosure with its mother and the other zebras.

He said the mother's diet has been changed with her nutrition in mind. Zebras mainly eat grass; the mother is now being given gram, carrots and bran as well. For safety reasons, it is not yet known whether the foal is male or female.

Including the newborn, the park now has 25 zebras. The sex of the new foal is not yet known; before its birth there were 14 females and 10 males.

Assistant Conservator of Forests Tabibur Rahman, officer in charge of the park, said that thanks to the authorities' close care, various foreign animals at the safari park are now breeding regularly in the local environment, and the zebra foal is part of that. As the park gradually becomes self-sufficient through animal births, its dependence on importing animals from abroad will one day decrease.

He said the zebra family is now one of the park's main attractions for visitors. The zebras move around in herds on the park's vast grazing land.
