Police have rescued two cubs of an endangered bear species in Alikadam, Bandarban, and arrested a young man, Md Alauddin, 24, for wildlife trafficking.

Bandarban Superintendent of Police Saikat Shahin confirmed the matter at a press conference at 11am on 2 April.

The arrested man, Md Alauddin, 24, is the son of Shamsul Alam of North Palong Para in Ward 3 of No. 1 Alikadam union parishad.

The police superintendent said police, acting on a tip-off, carried out a drive on the Alikadam-Chakaria road in the Shibatoli Para area of Ward 2, No. 2 Choikhyong union parishad. When they searched a motorcyclist named Md Alauddin, they found two bear cubs lying unconscious in a sack on his bike. He was arrested with the motorcycle for wildlife trafficking.

He added that talks are under way with the Forest Department about releasing the rescued cubs at the Chakaria Safari Park, and that Bandarban police are working to prevent wildlife trafficking from Bandarban's forests.
