A seven-foot python has been rescued from a chicken coop in Morrelganj, Bagerhat.

The snake was rescued on Friday morning (3 May) from the chicken coop of Mohsin Howlader in PC Boroikhali village of Nishanbaria union. Nishanbaria union chairman Saiful Islam confirmed the rescue.

Mohsin Howlader said he was woken in the morning by the chickens' unusual clucking. "When I went near the coop, I saw a huge python inside." On being informed, Barek Howlader, team leader of the Village Tiger Response Team, came and rescued the python.

Union Parishad chairman Saiful Islam said wild animals are often entering human settlements from the Sundarbans because of the intense heatwave and food shortages. Villagers living near the Sundarbans have been advised to stay alert.

He said the snake was handed over to the Dhansagar forest office of the Sundarbans' Chandpai range at around noon.

Abdul Baset, in charge of the Dhansagar forest office, said the python was released into the Sundarbans in the Gulishakhali patrol outpost area.

Present at the time were Village Tiger Response Team leader Barek Howlader, Nasir Talukdar, Union Parishad member Khalil Jomaddar and village police member Belayet Howlader, among others.
