Fifty-two sundhi turtles, a species banned from sale, have been released into Ghora Dighi, the pond beside the Sixty Dome Mosque world heritage site in Bagerhat. Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner ANM Foyzul Haque released the turtles on Wednesday afternoon.
Among those present were Nirmal Kumar Pal, divisional forest officer (DFO) for wildlife conservation in the Khulna region, and Md Zayed, custodian of the Sixty Dome Mosque and museum.
On the afternoon of Tuesday, 12 January, acting on a tip-off, the Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division had recovered the turtles from a fish depot at Batiaghata bazar in Khulna.
A mobile court sentenced a man named Nirapad Sarkar to six months' simple imprisonment for keeping the turtles. Hunting, keeping or selling this species of turtle is completely banned under the wildlife law.
