A week-long tree-planting programme has been taken up across the country to mark the 76th birthday of Awami League president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The Awami League's forest and environment affairs sub-committee will plant 76,000 saplings nationwide within a week.

The 76th birthday of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangabandhu's eldest daughter, will be celebrated on Wednesday, 28 September. The Awami League has planned discussion meetings, prayers, rallies, a photo exhibition and other programmes for the occasion.

The sub-committee said it would plant 76,000 saplings across the country within a week because the prime minister always plants saplings of various kinds to protect the environment. The programme was inspired by Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina, it said.

The sub-committee will begin the week-long programme on Wednesday at Tungipara in Gopalganj, the prime minister's birthplace, where members will plant about 20,000 palm saplings.

Sheikh Hasina was born on 28 September 1947 at Tungipara in Gopalganj, on the Madhumati river. She is the eldest child of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, architect of independent Bangladesh, and Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa, and is president of the Awami League.
