Rain has finally fallen in Australia and temperatures have dropped, but authorities have warned that the wildfires known in the country as bushfires will gather strength again.
Moderate rain has fallen along the east coast from Sydney to Melbourne, and some parts of New South Wales may see heavy downpours.
But on Sunday night the authorities warned that temperatures would rise again by Thursday.
Fear of a mega fire
They also said the huge fires burning in Victoria and New South Wales could join up to create a mega fire.
"There is no room for complacency," New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian warned on Monday morning.
The authorities are continuing to help the thousands of people left homeless by the fires.
"Now is the time for recovery work, and we must make sure those who have lost their homes are safe," Ms Berejiklian said.
Smoke still fouls the air
Although the rain has brought some relief, the air remains badly polluted.
The National Gallery of Australia in Canberra was closed on Monday "to reduce the risk of harm to visitors, staff and the artworks".
The Australian National University in the capital was also closed.
