Army chief General Waker-uz-Zaman has said that 11 lakh 36 thousand trees will be planted in cantonments across Bangladesh and in Jolshiri. The army does not just plant trees, he said; it protects and cares for them, and as a result the cantonments stay full of trees.

The army chief was speaking on Thursday, 16 July, at the opening of the Tree Plantation Campaign 2026 in the Nirjhor residential area of Dhaka Cantonment.

A press release from the Inter Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) said that under the campaign, themed "Let us adorn the country with trees, Bangladesh before all", saplings of fruit, timber and medicinal species as well as ornamental trees will be planted at suitable places in all cantonments, DOHS areas and the Jolshiri housing project. The programme will run until the last week of September.

The main aim of the programme is to encourage everyone to plant trees voluntarily, to increase the country's forest resources and protect the environmental balance. Senior officers from army headquarters and the Dhaka area, and military and civilian members of various ranks, attended the event.
