Abdel Wahab Saidani, Algeria's ambassador to Bangladesh, has visited Jhalakathi's famous floating market and guava orchards.
On the morning of 20 July, the ambassador saw guava production first-hand in the Bhimruli and Atghar Kuriana areas and spoke with local farmers.
After the visit the ambassador said guava is not grown in Algeria and there is potential to export guava from here. Efforts will be made to take the matter forward through discussions with the Algerian government and the ministries concerned, including agriculture.
A promising farming area
He said Bhimruli and Atghar Kuriana are a promising agricultural area. The floating market and guava cultivation here are very charming, and an example of Bangladesh's unique culture and economic activity.
Fortune Group chairman Mizanur Rahman and A K M Saidad Hossain, secretary to the Algerian ambassador in Bangladesh, accompanied the ambassador on the visit.
Mizanur Rahman said the Algerian ambassador had come to assess the potential for guava exports. If they agree, his group will preserve and process guava and export it.
In the monsoon, the floating guava markets that form on the vast wetlands of Jhalakathi and Pirojpur districts in the south have become one of the country's main attractions for agro-tourism.
