After long neglect, buffalo are raising new hopes. They are being raised on a modern livestock farm, and these animals look different, with a different skin colour. Some call them pink, others "albino". These buffalo are now signalling new potential.

Although important among domestic livestock, buffalo have never been highly valued. Thousands survive in coastal grazing grounds (bathan) facing disasters, and they face feed shortages every year.

In 2014, the private company Lal Teer announced success in decoding the buffalo genome in a joint venture with China, raising many hopes. The Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute later took up a project with big ambitions too. Without waiting for those dreams, one farm entrepreneur is dreaming big with pink albino buffalo.
