Agriculture Minister Dr Md Abdus Shahid has said the government is working to increase mango exports. He said this on Thursday morning (27 June) while visiting mango orchards in Nachole, Chapainawabganj.

The minister said: "Our country's mangoes are very sweet, so we want to export more mangoes abroad. Mangoes need branding, and that is what we are working towards. That is why ambassadors of various countries have been brought here."

He added that the agriculture ministry is giving farmers instructions on producing exportable mangoes.

Saying he was impressed by the mango orchards of Chapainawabganj, the agriculture minister said there are various mango varieties here, all of them fine and sweet. These mangoes badly need promotion, and more promotion will raise mango production, he said.

He said that is why a visit to the mango orchards had been arranged for ambassadors of various countries based in Dhaka. They will see for themselves and make recommendations, which will increase mango exports and boost the economy, he said.

Earlier in the morning, in Kandbona village of Nachole upazila, a team led by Agriculture Minister Dr Md Abdus Shahid visited the orchards. It included State Minister for Commerce Ahasanul Islam Titu, State Minister for Rural Development and Co-operatives Md Abdul Wadud, Agriculture Secretary Wahida Akter, Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen and the ambassadors of Brunei, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Pakistan, Singapore, Thailand, Bhutan, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Libya.
