Police have arrested four people for attempting to extort money at a temporary cattle market in Agailjhara, Barishal.

They were shown as arrested and sent to jail through the court on the afternoon of Thursday, 5 June.

The arrested are Rezvi Bakhtiar, son of the late Abdul Halim; Shaon Bakhtiar, son of Saiful Islam; Apu Bakhtiar, son of the late Zakir Hossain; and Shafiq Bakhtiar, son of the late Jamir Uddin, all of North Chandtrishira village in Agailjhara.

The officer-in-charge (OC) of Agailjhara police station, Md Oliur Rahman, confirmed the arrests.

According to market and police sources, several people used their influence to demand money at a temporary cattle market in the East Poysa area of the upazila on Wednesday night. When they were refused, they beat people at the market. Masud Bakhtiar of Chandtrishira village, a representative appointed by the market's leaseholder, filed a case with the police against six people. Police reached the scene and detained four, while the others fled.

The OC said the arrested accused had been sent to jail and that drives were under way to arrest the rest.
