A complaint has been filed at the police station against a woman in Adamdighi, Bogura, accused of killing a cat by cutting its throat because it had eaten fish.
Emran Hossain, a member of the Bangladesh Animal Welfare Association, filed a written complaint against the woman at Adamdighi police station on Wednesday afternoon (5 November).
According to the complaint, a few days earlier a cat entered the home of Bulbuli (26), daughter of Khoka, in the upazila's Dattabaria cluster village, and ate fish. When the cat went to her house again on Tuesday afternoon, she caught it in a rage, killed it by cutting its throat with a boti [kitchen blade], cut open its chest to pull out the entrails, and threw it into a paddy field next to the house. On learning of this, neighbour Shamsunnahar Mina brought the cat's body to her house, preserved it with ice in a cork-sheet box and informed the police.
Isahak, husband of neighbour Shamsunnahar Mina, said that a month ago they had come to visit the in-laws' home, bringing six pet cats. The cat that was killed used to stay with those cats. Then suddenly on Tuesday the woman named Bulbuli killed it cruelly, after which the matter was reported to the Bangladesh Animal Welfare Association, he said.
Law provides for prison or fine
Meanwhile, a video of the slaughtered cat left lying after it was killed spread on social media, and many expressed anger and disgust and demanded punishment. Bangladeshi law provides for two years in prison or a fine of Tk 50,000, or both, for cruelty to animals or abetting it. But the law is rarely used, and very few cases have been filed under it. In this brutal Adamdighi incident, however, a complaint has already been lodged.
Adamdighi police station officer-in-charge (OC) SM Mostafizur Rahman said the complaint had been received, the cat's body had been recovered and taken to the police station, and an investigation was under way.
Upazila livestock officer Benzir Ahmed said the incident was very tragic and that the cat's body had been sent to the morgue for a post-mortem.
