A writ petition has been filed seeking an order to stop sacrificial animal markets being set up illegally in the capital, including on Dhupkhola, the central playground of Jagannath University, Golapbagh ground and the T&T Colony ground.

The writ asks why an order should not be given to hold the cattle markets in open spaces other than playgrounds. It also seeks an order to stop the collection of extra money in the name of hasil (market toll).

The leaseholder firm has illegally set up a sacrificial animal market on the Dhupkhola ground in Old Dhaka. Digging up the ground, planting bamboo poles and stretching tarpaulins to keep cattle causes various problems, and the writ calls for the cattle markets to be held in a centralised way.

Supreme Court lawyer Dr Yunus Ali Akanda filed the writ on behalf of Arifur Rahman, and confirmed it to Jago News himself.

The matter may be heard by a High Court bench of Justice KM Kamrul Kader and Justice Shawkat Ali Chowdhury.
