Winter affects everything in nature. The soil in pots at home dries out too, and plants kept indoors, on the roof or on the balcony can become worn out at this time, so they need regular care.
Here is how to care for potted plants this winter:
Ten tips
- Winter does not mean plants should be kept cold. They still need sunlight at this time.
- Let the morning sun fall on the plants. This keeps them healthy even in winter.
- If it is very cold, keep small pots indoors and put them out on the balcony in the sun the next morning.
- Do not overwater in winter. The soil does not dry easily, so roots can rot. Check the soil before watering.
- Extra dust can settle on plants in winter. Wipe it off with a clean, soft cloth.
- Use a spray to water indoor pots, so no water is wasted.
- Many plants can die if the cold is severe. If this happens, you can prune the plant back a little.
- When the cold eases, your favourite plant will put out new leaves and freshen up.
- Make home-made compost from used tea leaves, vegetable peelings and eggshells. It is very useful.
- If the leaves turn pale, do not water; wait until the soil dries and keep the plant in sunlight.
