An elderly man, Jafar Alam (72), has been killed by a wild elephant in Chakaria, Cox's Bazar. The attack happened at dawn on Monday (5 May) in Ward 6 of Fashiakhali union in the upazila.

Jafar Alam was the son of the late Kalu Chowkidar of the Uchitar Bil area of the ward.

Helal Uddin, former chairman of Fashiakhali union, said Uchitar Bil lies in a wild elephant sanctuary area where many homes have been built. Early on Monday Jafar Alam came face to face with a wild elephant that had strayed from its herd, and the elephant threw him to the ground.

Md Mehraj Uddin, Fashiakhali range officer, said the forest office was gathering information about the man killed in the attack. On receiving an application, the necessary steps would be taken so that the family receives compensation under the rules, he said.
