Wheat is currently grown on 2 lakh 88 thousand hectares of land across the country, Agriculture Minister Mohammad Amin-ur-Rashid has said. The minister gave the figure on 18 June in a written reply to a question from member of parliament Selina Sultana in the Jatiya Sangsad. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed presided over the session.

The agriculture minister said 2 lakh 88 thousand hectares of land across the country are currently under wheat, and the government has adopted several plans to increase wheat cultivation.

The plans he listed are:

• strengthening the spread of new, high-yielding varieties in the main wheat-growing areas;
• including wheat in rice-based cropping patterns (rice-wheat-jute, rice-wheat-mung bean);
• popularising the more profitable four-crop pattern "early potato-wheat-maize-Aman rice" for the light-textured soils of the northern region;
• expanding wheat into non-traditional areas such as the salinity-prone south, fallow land in the Sylhet region, char lands, the Barind area, hill plains and tobacco land;
• developing and spreading wheat varieties capable of yielding 6 tonnes or more per hectare;
• increasing farmer training in modern wheat production, disease management, and seed production and storage;
• setting a fair price for wheat and buying wheat directly from farmers at government level.

The minister also said that every year farmers are given fertiliser, seed and other support through incentives to increase wheat cultivation. In the 2025-26 fiscal year, 179,300 farmers received 10kg of seed, 10kg of DAP and 10kg of MoP fertiliser per bigha of land under the incentive programme.
