Vegetarian Diets May Raise the Risk of Stroke

A study in the British Medical Journal says vegan or vegetarian diets lower the risk of heart disease but raise the risk of stroke.

A vegan or vegetarian diet may lower the risk of heart disease but raises the risk of stroke, according to a recently published study.

The study, published in the British Medical Journal, followed 48,000 people over 18 years.

Per 1,000 people, vegetarians had 10 fewer cases of coronary heart disease than meat eaters, but three more people at risk of stroke.

Dietitians say that whatever a person's diet, eating a wide variety of foods is better for health.

How the study was done

The study analysed data from the EPIC-Oxford study, a long-term research project that has examined people's diets and health over a long period.

Of the participants recruited between 1993 and 2001, half were meat eaters and just over 16,000 were vegetarians. Another 7,500 said they ate fish.

Participants were asked about their diets when they joined and again in 2010.
