The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has approved a State Livestock Mission that pays farmers a subsidy of Rs 40,000 for each indigenous cow they buy, up to two cows per farmer, Rural Voice reported.
The animals will also be insured, with the state government paying 85% of the premium and the farmer the remaining 15%, said Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Minister Dharampal Singh after the meeting, at which the Cabinet approved 22 proposals.
Singh said livestock is essential to doubling farmers' incomes, but the sector suffers from low productivity, fragmented markets and too little value addition. The mission is modelled on the National Livestock Mission and aims to create jobs, encourage entrepreneurship, raise productivity and improve market access.
Through breed improvement by artificial insemination, the state wants cows now giving two to three litres of milk a day to reach 10 litres. The mission will also promote poultry, goat and sheep farming.
The same Cabinet meeting approved a robotics and artificial intelligence park on 69.52 acres in Greater Noida and four link expressways of about 322 km.
