The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection raided the Tejgaon egg wholesale market and the Karwan Bazar chicken wholesale market to curb the ongoing price rise.

The drive took place on Thursday, 18 August. It found evidence that traders were raising egg and chicken prices as they pleased. The wholesalers could not show any receipts for buying eggs at higher prices from rural markets, nor had they given receipts to retail buyers for eggs sold at higher prices.

On these charges, two egg wholesalers in Tejgaon and one chicken shop in Karwan Bazar were each given a cautionary fine of Tk 10,000, a total of Tk 30,000.

The drive was led by Hasanuzzaman and Abdul Jabbar Mondal, both assistant directors of the directorate.

Hasanuzzaman told Jago News that at the egg wholesalers there were no receipts showing what the sellers had paid, no price list for their sales, and no receipts given to the people they sold to. "It is a completely paperless business," he said.

He said they were setting prices as they saw fit by watching supply and demand, without regard to any rules. "That is why we imposed a cautionary fine this time. If they do not comply, we will take strict action." The Karwan Bazar chicken wholesale market was in the same state, with no price list and traders asking and selling at whatever price they wanted, he said.
