Calling on everyone to come forward to protect the environment, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said we must protect our own environment ourselves. "If we do not look after the environment, we will be the ones who suffer," he said.
"Will we envy the beautiful places of other countries while destroying all the places in our own?" he asked.
The prime minister spoke at 2.15pm on Monday, 13 July, at the start of a programme to plant 350 saplings at once along both banks of the Sagardi canal next to Trish Godown in Barishal city.
"Shoulder to shoulder"
"People of all faiths and backgrounds fought together to make this country independent. Only a few days ago we drove the autocrat out of this country. People of every class, profession, faith and background came out on the streets and removed the autocrat. If we all work shoulder to shoulder in this way to do good things for the country and its people, we will all benefit. Let us pledge through this tree planting that each of us, from where we stand, will do our utmost to keep the environment beautiful and healthy," the head of government said.
"The responsibility does not end with planting the saplings. I would request that the local people and everyone who planted saplings here look after these trees together. When the trees grow, not only local people but also those who come here will benefit," he said.
With the prime minister were Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan; State Minister for Shipping Md Rajib Ahsan; Advocate Mojibur Rahman Sarwar, MP for Barishal-5 (Sadar); Abul Hossain Khan, MP for Barishal-6 (Bakerganj); Advocate Bilkis Akhter Jahan Shirin, administrator of Barishal City Corporation; and Akon Kuddusur Rahman, administrator of Barishal Zila Parishad, among others.
First visit as prime minister
Earlier, at around 9.30am, Tarique Rahman arrived at Bhurghata in Gournadi, Barishal, via the Dhaka-Kuakata highway. Local administration officials and BNP leaders and activists welcomed his motorcade. It is his first visit to Barishal as prime minister since the government was formed.
After taking part in the tree-planting and family card distribution programmes in Gournadi, the prime minister set off for Barishal city. The motorcade reached Band Road in the city at 2pm.
