A mother goat in Sylhet has given birth to two kids by caesarean section. The operation was carried out on 14 November at the PMAC Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU). The mother goat and both kids are now healthy.

The successful operation was carried out at midday under the supervision of Dr Animesh Chandra Roy, associate professor in SAU's Department of Surgery and Theriogenology.

In the evening Dr Roy said the goat belonged to a man from the West Hatkhola area of Sylhet Sadar upazila. The goat went into labour on 13 November but could not deliver normally. The owner first took it to the government livestock hospital at Mirzajangal in Sylhet city, where the vets on duty tried but failed to achieve a normal delivery. He then brought the goat to SAU's PMAC Veterinary Teaching Hospital on 14 November.

"We first observed the goat and realised its condition was not good," Dr Roy said. "The goat is a local breed, but it was mated with a male of a foreign breed, so it was carrying large foreign-breed kids. Its hindquarters had also been injured. That is why it could not deliver normally."

"We then delivered the two kids by caesarean at midday on Sunday. The mother and both kids are now doing well. We have given the goat the necessary treatment and given the owner instructions," he said.

Dr Animesh added that the PMAC Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Sylhet Agricultural University occasionally delivers calves and kids by caesarean from pregnant cows and goats in critical condition. It also treats and operates on various complicated diseases.
