One hundred crocodiles have been released in the Sundarbans, a World Heritage Site, to mark the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Habibun Nahar Talukder, Deputy Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, formally released the crocodiles on the afternoon of 15 December in front of the Karamjal Wildlife Breeding and Tourism Centre in the Chandpai range of the East Sundarbans.

Present were Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) Md Amir Hossain Chowdhury, Khulna region Conservator of Forests (CF) Mihir Kumar Do, East Sundarbans Division DFO Muhammad Belayet Hossain, West Sundarbans Division DFO Abu Naser Mohsin Hossain, Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division DFO Nirmal Kumar Paul and Karamjal centre officer-in-charge Howlader Azad Kabir.

Chief Conservator of Forests Md Amir Hossain Chowdhury said that, on the instruction of the forest ministry, 100 crocodiles were being released in the rivers and canals of the Chandpai, Sharankhola, Khulna and Satkhira ranges of the Sundarbans to increase the number of crocodiles there.
