Rivers in Sunamganj have started to fall, Emdadul Haque, executive engineer-2 of the district Water Development Board, confirmed on the morning of 11 July.

According to the board, the Surma, Kushiyara, Jadukata, Baulai and Rakti rivers in Sunamganj rose for three days because of continuous rain and onrush from upstream. But with less rain and less hill runoff through the day from 9am on Friday, the Surma fell by 2 cm in the 24 hours to 9am on Saturday. Rivers along the border also fell. Even so, the risk of flooding in the district has not passed.

Emdadul Haque said that although the rivers in Sunamganj had risen rapidly over the past few days, the Surma had fallen by 2 cm in the last 24 hours. But the district is still at risk of flooding, he said.

With the threat of flooding, the municipal authority has already issued a notice cancelling leave for all municipal officers and staff. Md Motiur Rahman Khan, acting deputy director of the local government branch, confirmed this to Jagonews24 on Saturday morning.

The notice says heavy rain and hill runoff could create a flood situation in Sunamganj. In view of this, leave for all municipal officers and staff has been cancelled and a control room has been set up to deal with the disaster.
