"The Sonali bag is in wide demand because it is eco-friendly. It will be able to meet global packaging demand as well as domestic demand. The Sonali bag made from jute will help bring back the country's golden age of jute."

M Sakhawat Hossain, adviser to the Ministry of Textiles and Jute, said this on Wednesday, 28 August, when Dr Mobarak Ahmad Khan, inventor of the Sonali bag, paid him a courtesy call at the Secretariat. Samples of the Sonali bag were handed over in the presence of Md Abdur Rouf, secretary of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute.

Dr Mobarak Ahmad Khan invented the eco-friendly bag in 2016 by processing cellulose from jute. In 2017 a project was taken up to make Sonali bags at the Latif Bawany Jute Mill, controlled by the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC). Last year a research project to improve the bag's quality was completed with funding from the Bangladesh Climate Change Trust.
