A housewife named Jyotsna Singha, 38, has died after being bitten by a snake in Boalkhali, Chattogram. She was bitten while drinking tea at her home in Ward 4 of Popadia union in Boalkhali on the night of Friday, 31 July.

She was the wife of Uttam Chowdhury of the area and had no children. Her cremation was held on Saturday, 1 August.

Her brother-in-law Manas Kanti Chowdhury said Jyotsna was sitting in a room next to the kitchen. "Hearing her scream, we went and found she had been bitten by a snake. She was quickly taken to Boalkhali Upazila Health Complex, where her blood was tested," he said.

He added that when her condition worsened, the doctor sent her to Chattogram Medical College (CMC) Hospital, where a doctor in the emergency department declared her dead at around 9pm on Friday.

Dr Rajarshi Nag, the duty doctor in the emergency department of Boalkhali Upazila Health Complex, said the patient was brought to hospital at around 7.45pm. Neither the patient nor her relatives could say for certain what had bitten her, and there were no definite signs of a snakebite at that time, so it was treated as an "unknown bite". She was still admitted and treated. About half an hour later, when her condition deteriorated, she was referred to CMC Hospital, where they later learned she had died.
