Six herbs, from mint to thyme, can be grown in small jars of water by a window for anyone short of space for plants.

Cooking

Do you long to grow plants at home but lack the space? Then imagine keeping herbs in a few small jars of water by the window of your kitchen or living room. Here are six kinds of plant you can easily keep in water and enjoy for their herbal qualities.

1. Mint

Mint does well in soft sunlight. A cut stem placed in water roots easily. The leaves give a refreshing scent and are used in everything from tea to various dishes.

2. Parsley

Kept in water, parsley puts out roots in 2-3 weeks. It is used to serve dishes such as salads and soups.

3. Rosemary

A rosemary sprig placed in water and kept in the light will root within a few weeks. This mildly fragrant plant is used in cooking and as a general aromatic.

4. Oregano

A popular Italian herb, oregano roots easily in water and gives dishes a delicious flavour. Many Bengalis now use it, especially in pizza and pasta.

5. Spring onion (onion leaves)

Cut off the base of an onion and put it in water and new leaves will grow. If it is kept a few centimetres above the water rather than fully submerged, roots come quickly and the base is less likely to rot. The tops can be cut daily from the tip for cooking.

6. Thyme

Thyme is another aromatic herb. A sprig put in water soon starts growing new roots. It is used mostly in roasted dishes and in tea.

These plants do not just add beauty; they are also very useful for health and cooking. So gather your favourites today.
