The coastal forest department has rescued two spotted deer caught in poachers' traps on the sea coast of Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram. One of them died, while the other was given first aid at the upazila livestock hospital.

The incident took place on the afternoon of 4 March in the Bogachatar area of No 1 Syedpur union of the upazila.

Bogachatar coastal beat officer Khandaker Ariful Islam said two spotted deer were caught in poachers' traps in the keora forest on the Bogachatar coast that afternoon. A local farmer saw them and informed the forest department, whose staff rescued the deer and brought them to the beat office. One deer was dead. The other was injured and was sent to the upazila livestock hospital.

He said no poachers were found at the scene, but the traps were seized. The two deer weighed about 100 kg. It is thought that they were trapped when they came to eat keora fruit.

Upazila livestock officer Dr Tahmina Arzu said forest department staff brought in one injured deer and it was treated. It would be taken that day to CVASU (Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University) for better treatment, she said.
