A barking deer was held captive at the Olinagar embankment area of Sitakunda in Chattogram. It was later rescued with the help of coastal forest guards.

Local people said that at about 10am on Monday (3 March), Alauddin of Miaji Para, ward 6, and several others chased the deer with their pet dogs and tied it up.

Inquiries found that dogs were chasing a deer that had strayed from its group. Running for its life, it became stuck in mud. According to this account, villagers then saved the deer from the dogs. Forest department staff rescued it at about 2:30pm after being informed.

The forest department said six deer had recently been released into the mangrove forest on the Guliakhali sea coast of Sitakunda, and the deer stuck in the mud was one of them. It left the forest in the morning after becoming separated from the group, was chased by dogs and got stuck in the mud.

Rony Ali, officer of the Sitakunda range of the coastal forest department, said the rescued deer was weak and had dog-bite wounds on its neck. It had been taken to the upazila livestock officer's office for treatment and would be released back into the forest once it recovered.
