A crack about 50 metres long has opened in the Padma river bank-protection embankment at the Sureshwar fish landing in Naria upazila, Shariatpur. Residents said it first appeared before dawn on Wednesday, 30 September.
As the news spread, traders and residents along the river panicked. Fearing the embankment would collapse, traders at the fish landing began moving their shops and goods.
Naria Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Abdul Kaium Khan and Md Jashim Uddin, sub-assistant engineer of the Shariatpur Water Development Board, inspected the site.
"The Water Development Board officials have been informed. The cause of the crack and the risk are being assessed, and the necessary steps are being taken so that the situation does not get worse and people are kept safe," the UNO said.
Residents say major damage is likely unless emergency repairs start on the cracked section at once.
