They stand 3 to 4 feet tall or more and are at least 5 feet long, with long ears and big horns a foot long. Their coats are light pink and greyish white. Their names are Hasa and Hasi, and they are now the main attraction for visitors to the capital's Shahjahanpur cattle market.
They are two buffaloes, also called 'LB new' white or pink buffaloes. They were brought to the market for Eid-ul-Azha by Alam, a businessman of Shahidbagh who owns Shahbazpur Halal Meat.
The bigger buffalo has eight teeth and the smaller one five. The smaller is priced at Tk 5 lakh and the bigger at Tk 8 lakh. They are tied to a post in front of Aziz Hotel, along with several cattle.
Crowds come to look
The two animals have become the market's main attraction. Local men and women, and children too, are coming to catch a glimpse, and other sellers cannot help looking at them. Anyone who visits the market goes to see them and asks their price.
Alam Bepari told Jagonews24: "I brought the two buffaloes from India as calves, as a hobby. Many people wanted them last time, but one was still small, so I did not bring them to market. This year I have. Many people are looking and asking the price. If the price is right, I will let them go."
Markets getting ready
Nineteen cattle markets are being held in the capital's two city corporations this year. Work is almost complete; a few markets have some work left, but it is going on day and night. If all goes well, sales will begin in full from Friday.
Although a day remains before the set time for sales, cows and goats have already started reaching the capital's markets. City corporation monitoring cells will be present to prevent irregularities, the central bank has ordered counterfeit-note detection machines at every market, and law enforcers will protect traders coming from remote areas.
Meher Ali of Jhenaidah brought two truckloads of cattle to the Shahjahanpur market on Thursday (22 June) night. "We bring cattle here every year. If you don't come a little early you don't get space. More cattle are coming. We have brought some already, and the rest will come on Saturday," he said.
