At least 15 people have been injured by a jackal's bites in Saidpur, Nilphamari. A teenager who was seriously hurt has been admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

The incident happened around 9am on Friday, 15 September, in Patwari Para in ward 10 of the municipality. Angry residents then reportedly beat the jackal to death.

The names of nine of the injured who were treated at the emergency department of the Saidpur 100-bed hospital are known: Sudarshan Roy (30), Nirmal Kumar (35), Ali Hossain (70), Habibur Rahman (15), Khadimul Islam (30), Hasanur Ali (34), Jewel Hossain (25), Azizul Haque (65) and Zahid Hossain (30).

Locals said that at around 9am a jackal suddenly came out of a bamboo grove and began attacking everyone in its way, biting at least 15 people at Monsur's crossing in Khorkhoria Para of the Patwari Para area. Relatives took several of the bleeding injured to the Saidpur 100-bed hospital.

A teenager among the injured, Habibur Rahman Habib, was sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital in a serious condition.

Confirming the incident, Saidpur municipality ward 10 councillor Kazi Monowar Hossain Haider said the injured had been taken to hospital and angry residents had beaten the jackal to death.

Touhida Siddika Ria, the doctor on duty in the hospital's emergency department, said nine people bitten by the jackal had received first aid by noon. They were sent to the district sadar hospital for vaccines, and one seriously injured person was sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
