A rare species of otter has been caught while a man was fishing in a pond in Bhola.

On Saturday morning (14 November) the forest department released the otter in the Char Kukri-Mukri sanctuary in Bhola's Char Fasson upazila.

Locals said the rare, blackish-brown otter was caught on Friday (13 November) when Md Gias Uddin of ward 8 of Char Fasson municipality went fishing in the pond at his home. Char Fasson upazila forest department officials learned of it and rescued the otter from his house that night.

Md Alauddin, range officer of the Char Fasson forest department, said: "We rescued the otter on Friday night. It was released in the Char Kukri-Mukri forest on Saturday morning."

He added that this otter is now close to extinction, and it is thought that it came into the settlement in search of food.
