A farmer named Usching Marma, 45, has been killed in a wild elephant attack at Rajasthali in Rangamati.

The incident happened at 10am on Thursday (27 February) in Kaitak Para village of Gaindya union in the upazila. Usching Marma was the son of the late Kyao Marma, a farmer of the village.

Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury, officer in charge (OC) of Rajasthali police station, confirmed the incident.

He said Usching Marma had left home in the morning to work in an orchard in his area when he was attacked by an elephant on the way. The elephant trampled him. Local people rescued him and took him to hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

The dead man's son, Mongchai Marma, said work was going on in their banana orchard in the Kaitak Para area. His father was attacked by the elephant on his way to the orchard after leaving home in the morning, and died on the spot.

Lamuching Marma, a member of Gaindya union parishad (UP), said herds of wild elephants often come down into settlements in search of food. That morning too, a herd came into a banana field, and farmer Usching Marma was killed in the elephant attack.
